The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A light earthquake occurred IN CENTRAL VIRGINIA about 30 miles west of Richmond at 1:59 PM MST, Dec 9, 2003 (3:59 PM EST in Virginia). This was a complex event consisting of two sub-events occurring 12 seconds apart.
The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. The earthquake was felt throughout much of Virginia and minor damage has been reported in Nelson county. The earthquake was also felt in parts of Maryland and North Carolina.
