This earthquake occurred within the Pacific plate, which subducts to the northwest beneath the North American plate. The rate of relative plate convergence is 77 mm/year. Beneath central Kamchatka, the Pacific plate dips to the northwest at an angle of 45 degrees and is known to be seismically active to a depth of about 200 km. The June 10, 2004, earthquake occurred within tens of kilometers of the magnitude 6.9 earthquake of June 16, 2003.
