The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred about 80 km (50 miles) W of Rivas, Nicaragua at 3:26 PM MDT, Oct 9, 2004 (3:26 PM local time in Nicaragua). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.

Felt at Managua and much of Nicaragua. Felt (IV) at San Salvador, El Salvador. Felt as far north as Tegucigalpa, Honduras and as far south as San Jose, Costa Rica.
