The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A major earthquake occurred about 270 km (170 miles) west of Invercargill, New Zealand at 1:26 PM MST, Nov 22, 2004 (Nov 23 at 9:26 AM local time in New Zealand). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.

Minor damage at Invercargill and in the Southland-Otago area. Felt in much of the South Island and as far north as Hamilton on the North Island.
