The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred about 205 km (130 miles) west of Sibolga, Sumatra, Indonesia or about 1410 km (880 miles) northwest of Jakarta, Java, Indonesia at 7:54 PM MDT, May 18, 2005 (May 19 at 8:54 AM local time in Indonesia). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.

Felt (IV) at Meulaboh and Sibolga; (III) at Banda Aceh, Sumatra. Felt at Medan, Sumatra. Felt (II) at Gelugor, Malaysia. Also felt at Bukit Mertajam, George Town, Kuala Lumpur, Sungai Ara and Tanjong Tokong, Malaysia.
