The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred 70 km (40 miles) WSW of Rivas, Nicaragua at 8:16 PM MDT, Jul 1, 2005 (8:16 PM local time in Nicaragua). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.
Felt (IV) at Managua and San Juan del Sur. Also felt (IV) at Curridabat and San Pedro; (III) at Escazu, Costa Rica. Felt (II) at San Salvador, El Salvador. Felt in much of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.
