The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred 110 km (70 miles) E of Calama, Chile at 12:26 PM MST, Nov 17, 2005 (3:26 PM local time in Chile). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time.

Power outages in Tocopilla. Felt (VI) at Mejillones and Tocopilla; (V) at Antofagasta, Calama, Caldera, Camina, Chanaral, Copiapo, Huara, Sierra Gorda and Taltal; (IV) at Diego de Almagro, El Salvador, Iquique, Maria Elena, San Pedro de Atacama, Tierra Amarilla and Vallenar; (III) at Arica and Camarones, Chile. Also felt (II) at Calana and Tacna, Peru.
