The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred IN THE LAKE TANGANYIKA REGION about 55 km (35 miles) southeast of Kalemie, Dem. Republic of the Congo or about 150 km (90 miles) south of Kigoma , Tanzania at 5:19 AM MST, Dec 5, 2005 (2:19 PM local time in Congo). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.

At least six people killed, 300 houses destroyed and a church collapsed at Kalamie, Congo. Felt (IV) at Arusha, Tanzania and Kigali, Rwanda. Felt (III) in Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya. Also felt at Bujumbura, Burundi.
