The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred about 270 km (165 miles) SW of Sibolga at 9:28 AM MDT, May 16, 2006 (10:28 PM local time in Indonesia). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.
Felt (VI) at Gunungsitoli. Felt (V) at Sibolga; (IV) at Banda Aceh and Padang; felt at Bukittinggi, Sumatra. Felt at Balakong, Butterworth and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Also felt in Singapore. Ground cracks observed on Nias.
