Magnitude 7.0 SCOTIA SEA

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred about 495 km (305 miles) WSW of Bristol Island, South Sandwich Islands or about 3240 km (2010 miles) N of South Pole, Antarctica at 9:41 PM MDT, Aug 19, 2006 (Aug 20 at 1:41 AM local time in Scotia Sea). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No damage is expected.
