Magnitude 6.8 BOUGAINVILLE REGION, PAPUA NEW GUINEA

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred 60 km (40 miles) S of Arawa, Bougainville, PNG; 2310 km (1430 miles) N of BRISBANE, Queensland, Australia at 4:18 AM MDT, Sep 1, 2006 (8:18 PM local time in Papua New Guinea). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.
