Magnitude 6.9 SAMOA ISLANDS REGION

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: A strong earthquake occurred 195 km (120 miles) ESE of Hihifo, Tonga. 290 km (180 miles) SSW of PAGO PAGO, American Samoa. 610 km (380 miles) NE of NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga at 12:22 AM MDT, Sep 28, 2006 (Sep 27 at 7:22 PM local time in Samoa Islands Region). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.

Felt (IV) at Alofi and (III) at Tamakautoga, Niue. Felt (III) at Apia. Also felt (III) at Neiafu, Tonga. A tsunami with a wave height of 16 cm (peak-to-trough) was recorded at Pago Pago, American Samoa.
