The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: An earthquake occurred IN THE HOKKAIDO, JAPAN REGION, about 125 km (80 miles) SSW of Kushiro or about 775 km (485 miles) NNE of TOKYO at 6:20 PM MDT, Sep 10, 2008 (Sep 11 at 9:20 AM local time in Japan). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size.
Felt (IV) at Sapporo and (III) at Misawa. Felt at Hakodate and Otofuke. Recorded (5L JMA) in southern Hokkaido. Also recorded (3 JMA) in Aomori and Iwate; (2 JMA) in Akita, Miyagi and Yamagata; (1 JMA) in Fukushima, Gumma, Ibaraki and Tochigi. A small tsunami was recorded at Hanasaki.
