The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: An earthquake occurred 185 km (115 miles) ENE of L'Esperance Rock, Kermadec Islands and 1350 km (840 miles) NE of WELLINGTON, New Zealand at 11:24 PM MST, Dec 8, 2008 (Dec 09 at 6:24 PM local time in Kermadec Islands). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. There have been no reports of damage.
