The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: An earthquake occurred in the Kermadec Islands Region, about 270 km (170 miles) South-Southwest of Raoul Island or about 825 km (520 miles) Northeast of Auckland, New Zealand at 6:53 PM MDT, May 15, 2009 (May 16 at 12:53 PM local time in Kermadec Islands). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. This earthquake is located in a remote area and no damage or casualties are expected.
