Magnitude 7.7 VANUATU

News Release

The following is a release by the United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center: An earthquake occurred about 260 km (160 miles) S of Lata, Santa Cruz Islands or 295 km (180 miles) NNW of Luganville, Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu or 785 km (490 miles) ESE of HONIARA, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands at 4:03 PM MDT, Oct 7, 2009 (Oct 08 at 9:03 AM local time in Vanuatu). The magnitude and location may be revised when additional data and further analysis results are available. No reports of damage or casualties have been received at this time; however, this earthquake may have caused damage due to its location and size. A second event with a preliminary magnitude of 7.3 ocurred in the Vanuatu region fifteen and a half minutes after the magnitude Earthquakes of this type sometimes cause tsunamis, however the USGS has no information that an actual tsunami has been generated.
